Abstract

The City of Palm Desert has developed an innovative way to travel within their City. Golf carts traditionally used on fairways are able to travel on City streets with special modifications for safety. The City of Palm Desert, located in Southern California, is proud to be the first City in the nation to develop a golf cart transportation program. Their efforts are so successful that now, any City in the State of California is able to establish a similar program. California Assembly Bill 110 authorizes cities to initiate and administer golf cart programs. The program is monitored regularly and City staff coordinates with California Highway Patrol to provide periodic reports to the legislature. Future modifications to the program may be made to protect the user, to expand the use of golf carts, and to protect the City. ermitted users are allowed to travel to schools, colleges, parks, shopping, businesses, and governmental offices by means of their golf carts. The long term goal of the program is to provide full golf cart access throughout the City. (A)
