Abstract

CIVITAS was initiated in the year 2000 by the European Commission to stimulate cities to experiment with innovative measures for clean urban transport and to disseminate knowledge about these measures on a wide and Pan European scale. CIVITAS partly finances 36 EU cities for implementing more than 400 measures within various action fields, among which experiments with alternative fuels, access restrictions or telematics. All measures will be thoroughly evaluated, so that the “living laboratory” will result in an enormous amount of scientifically supported experiences. Furthermore it is aimed to develop CIVITAS as a brand for initiatives for clean urban transport. Dutch and Flemish participation in CIVITAS has been limited so far limited, this paper urges to contribute to the initiative in the future. (Author/publisher)
