Abstract

A system for classifying coarse aggregates according to their skid resistance performance in dense-graded bituminous concrete surface courses was developed. The purpose of this classification is to specify the permissible aggregates in such a way as to increase the likelihood that a new, dense-graded surface would have a skid number of 40 or greater throughout each succeeding year. The method used to determine the Skid Resistance Level ratings of aggregate sources is described.
