Abstract

The author outlines developments in computer technology relevant to transport management applications and focuses on the benefits of client/server architecture. The networks that can be involved and the way in which a system could be built up are outlined. Benefits of the concept are listed. These include hardware and software vendor independence, faster application prototyping and development, easier adoption of new technologies and easier upgrades.
