Abstract

Studies into the causes of accidents clearly demonstrate the central role of the cognitive skills of the drivers. Three- kinds of cognitive behaviour are discussed: supervision (surveillance) judging and deciding. The relationships between these behaviours and the causes of accidents is discussed. Emphasis is given to the fact that lack of attention, resulting in gaps in supervision behaviour, is inherent to the automatised character of driving.
