Abstract

ITS systems require a wide range of highway data. RADEF is a data exchange system developed for the European road administrations as a response to the growing needs of ITS and related activities across regional and national boundaries. The paper describes the background to RADEF and its recent developments. It also highlights the successful process of integrating the RADEF standardisation requirements for the exchange of highway information into the ISO GDF (Geographic Data File) standard, and the critical role played by the ERTICO Committee on Global Standardisation of Digital Map Databases for ITS. It also addresses the practical applications for RADEF in the supply of data to the European Commission and the ITS market. (A*)
