Abstract

The "Collection of work zone accident data" study involves the development of an accident data reporting process for use in construction, maintenance, or utility work areas. The process is based on the results of a nine state survey which collect ed information on practices and procedures which were in use in those states. The process supplements regular police accident reporting and provides for both short range feedback (immediate project application) and long range summaries (statewide application). The process has been described in a users manual titled "Work zone accident data process" (FHWA-IP-82-15). Following the development of the process, it was given field trials in Iowa and North Carolina. The trial applications and the recommendations provided by each of the two states suggest the process has application at selected locations, for projects with selected types of traffic controls, and for use as a model in updating states' existing construction accident reporting systems.
