Abstract

This article describes the development and application of the accident data bank maintained by the University of Michigan's Highway Safety Research institute. The program is intended to meet the needs of highway safety researchers by enhancing the capacity to look at accidents from two approaches. The success of failure of changes in the transportation system must be determined by observation and investigation of real world traffic and accidents. Both prospective and retrospective studies are discussed.
