Abstract

This paper reports on the formulation and use of a simple deterministic Monte-Carlo computer model of a platoon of (ten) vehicles, aimed at assessing the impact that differing control or advice strategies may have on the chances of collision avoidance when 'emergency braking' occurs on the motorway. In order to accomplish this, a simple driver 'emergency' model has been formulated and the effect of a simple ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) strategy investigated. Impact has been assessed through an evaluation of the percentage chance of a vehicle being involved in a collision, and the associated probability of a fatality occurring. Variables investigated include the effect of differing headways, operating speeds, braking responses and the penetration of equipped vehicles. (A*)
