The motorist compartment has evolved from an open, unprotected seating space to a fully enclosed protective structure making use of greatly improved materials. Current engineering knowledge makes it possible to radically improve the safety that this important structure must provide each day for millions of motorists. An appraisal of the current status of collision research is provide with examples of categories needing further development for purposes of suggesting areas where concentration of effort would provide opportunity for the greatest reduction in motorist injuries.
