Abstract

The use of intelligent design in commercial vehicles to reduce the rate of accidents is considered from a European viewpoint. Electronic driving aids under development include manoeuvre area monitoring, driver status monitoring, vehicle monitoring, the design of the man-machine interface, and vehicle control. The enabling technologies include area monitoring sensors, global positioning systems (GPS) and the global system for mobile communications (GSM). A forecast for the development of safety systems is provided, with automatic driving in a dedicated scenario expected by about 2020.
