Abstract

Criteria for evaluating alternative road networks are defined in terms of minimum cost, taking into account both construction costs and the costs of vehicle operation. These criteria are then applied to two network design problems. The first problem concerns the design of a network when all trips start or finish at a central point. The nature of possible optimum designs is discussed, and certain specific alternatives are compared. The second problem concerns the design of a network to serve a large area over which trips are generated uniformly.
