The Oeresund Link tunnel and Sodra Lanken (the Southern Link) motorway tunnel in Stockholm were both designed in the early nineties. It is therefore natural that the two safety concepts for the two tunnel projects are similar to a large extent. However, there are some interesting differences as well. The goals established in the field of tunnel safety are approximately the same for both tunnel systems. These goals are practically the same in Sweden as in Denmark, and in simplified terms they mean that travelling in tunnels should be as safe as travelling on the road above-ground. In order to verify that the goals for safety levels have been achieved, quantitative analyses have been conducted for both tunnel systems. The risk analyses have also included performance analyses of technical installations as well as cost-benefit analyses. In most respects, the considerations and decisions are based on the same grounds for the two tunnel systems.
