Abstract

This scientific poster presents a study that compared the sensitivity and specificity of the Pre-Hospital Index (PHI) and the Revised Trauma Score (RTS) in identifying patients who have major trauma. The study was based on 1105 trauma patients admitted at the Montreal General Hospital Trauma Center in Canada, between April 1993 and June 1995. The mean age of the study group was 46 years, and 67% were male. The mechanism of injury was a motor vehicle crash (MVC) for 38% of the patients. The PHI and RTS had significant correlations with the ISS. The correlation between the PHI and the RTS was also significant. The results suggest that the PHI could accurately identify patients who need high level care, and that the psychometric properties of this measurement are equal if not superior to the RTS. The simplicity of calculating this scale may make it an acceptable alternative to the RTS in the algorithms and protocols used for on scene triage of trauma patients by emergency medical personnel.
