Abstract

This section of circular E-C117 discusses the compatibility of trucks and buses with the roadway environment. Although the operating characteristics of trucks may be more critical, traditionally highways were designed for passenger cars with minimum attention to the limitations of trucks. Included in this discussion are a review of recent research; a look at specific problem areas, such as curves and exit ramps, speed limits for heavy vehicles, and intersections and lane merges; a look at where crashes are happening; and comments on future research needs.
