Abstract
Progressive cognitive impairment is a disabling condition that eventually impairs driving and increases the risk of motor-vehicle crashes. Older drivers with cognitive impairment pose a challenge for physicians perform this assessment and respond when faced with cognitively impaired older drivers is uncertain. There are few guidelines and no formal training provided to physicians to perform these tasks. In this article, the authors present data on risk factors, assessment strategies, and reporting and retesting issues pertinent to clinicians who must determine competency to drive in cognitively impaired older adults.
