Abstract

THIS NOTE REPORTS ON TWO TECHNICAL ISSUES RAISED BY A PAPER BY GLAISTER ON BUS/MINIBUS COMPETITION (SEE IRRD NUMBER 285638) RELATED TO THE MODELLING OF BOARDING AND ALIGHTING BY PASSENGERS, AND ON THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITH A REVISED VERSION OF THE COMPUTER MODEL. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE PROCEDURE USED BY GLAISTER TO MODEL PASSENGERS BOARDING BEHAVIOUR LED TO A SIGNIFICANT OVER-ESTIMATION OF THE NUMBER OF PASSENGERS CHOOSING SMALL BUSES AND THE PASSENGER ALIGHTING MODEL OVERESTIMATES THE MEAN TRIP LENGTH AND ALSO CREATES A BIAS TOWARDS SMALL BUSES. AMENDING THE MODEL TO ALLOW FOR THESE EFFECTS CHANGES THE NATURE OF THE RESULTS. THESE CHANGES ARE DISCUSSED. IN A REJOINDER TO THIS NOTE, THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR (GLAISTER) NOTES THE IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED BY GALVEZ AND LISTS HIS OWN CONCLUSIONS DRAWN FROM GALVEZ'S MODIFIED PROCEDURE. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO EXPLAIN SOME OF THE APPARENT DIFFERENCES.
