Abstract

As part of the Polish National Traffic Safety Improvement Programme (GAMBIT) a complementary information Traffic Safety System has been created within the confines of a Road Management Information System (RMIS). A subsystem collects and updates information about accidents, including film and photographic documentation. It is assumed that hospitals and transport companies will be co-operating with the police in collecting accident data. In the database subsystem maps of accidents are stored together with description of accidents. The data analysis system makes general and detailed assessments and suggests ways to improve the traffic safety situation. So far the system has been fully implemented within the city of Bydgoszcz (400.000 inhabitants) but selected elements have been put in practice in several other Polish cities.
