Abstract

This speech presents the reorganisation of the Dutch police. After this, an analysis is given of the traffic role of the police following the reorganisation. In addition, it is stated that an integrated safety approach is increasingly gaining ground and is being applied more and more in the road safety field. The integrated road safety approach is considered as being an integral, plan-oriented approach to road safety in which synergy can be achieved on the basis of close cooperation. The idea of working with the available police potential in the most efficient and effective manner is supported while the strength of the police remains the same. This is possible by carrying out activities which bring about a higher level of compliance. The five points of action for improving compliance have a sequential relationship, and are presented as follows: (1) the policy; (2) the regulations; (3) the implementation; (4) the enforcement; and (5) the organisation. In each of them the role of the police is described.
