Abstract

The effectiveness of compulsory seat belt legislation during its first two years of operation, is evaluated. Although New Zealand results have not been as impressive as those found in Australia, fatal injuries to vehicle occupants levelled off at a time when all other road user fatalities increased markedly. Fatal and serious injuries to drivers of past 1965 vehicles were significantly reduced.
