Abstract

In Australia some unique road safety legislation is initiated. The wearing of crash helmets by all motorcyclists and pillion-riders was made compulsory in 1961. Subsequently the number of deaths of motorcyclists was reduced by half. In January 1971 the wearing of seat belts by motor car occupants was also made compulsory. Events leading to the introduction of this legislation are described.
