Abstract

This chapter describes the computer systems used by British Rail (BR) for the planning, monitoring and control of its rail operations. BR's operations systems have evolved over the last decade and are still under development. The major systems involve very large databases which are housed in an IBM mainframe complex. This chapter considers train service planning, scheduling, rostering, monitoring and control.
