Abstract

This is the first two companion papers providing an interpretative survey of recent estimates of price elasticities of demand for various modes of transport. The authors consider various concepts of demand elasticities, and in the process several improvements in the methodology of transport demand studies are described. They also summarise the results for over sixty relevant recent studies, and identify a number of problems along with suggested priorities for future research. The bibliography for this paper is a joint bibliography for this paper and is published after the companion paper by P B Goodwin, entitled 'A review of new demand elasticities with special reference to short and long effects of price changes'.
