To aid in the understanding of the phenomenon of route choice in networks, two interlinked mathematical models were developed: ATCODE which permits the description of user preferences by abstracting from constraints imposed by the capacities of network components: ADECODE which permits the description of load characteristics while taking into full account actual flow relationships within the network. The paper gives a comprehensive report on experiments performed by use of the second model, in order to determine its response to desired objectives and, above all, its usefulness for transforming into concrete terms the various kinds of results that it is able to produce.
