Abstract

The St Kilda Street Bridge is approximately 100 years old and is the only remaining bridge of its type in Victoria, designed by John Monash in the early years of the last century. It is a 5-span cast in-situ bridge and has shown significant deterioration in the form of cracking and spalling in various structural components. The bridge is on the official route of heavy vehicles, such as B-doubles, and needs to be strengthened. The purpose of this work was to investigate the present condition of the bridge and its load capacity, and to determine an appropriate maintenance strategy, incorporating options for treatment/replacement, considering a service life extension of another 100 years. This paper provides a summary of the field and laboratory investigations, and recommends appropriate intervention, taking into account the outcomes of structural analysis and economic evaluation of the repair/replacement options.
