Abstract

At the conference "Road Safety Europe" held in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, September 21-23, 1998, one of the themes was "Safety of vulnerable road users-especially in urban areas". Five of the papers presented within this framework were: Road safety of children in a Northrhine-Westphalian city (Heine,W.D., Poschadel, S., Strehl, S. and Wiebusch-Wothge, R.); The vulnerability of the South African adult pedestrian (Drotské, L.); Pedestrian safety in urban areas crossed by national roads (Krystek, R., Jamroz, K., Michalski, L., and Marszanek, R.); On a partially new approach to traffic planning and street design in Sweden (Wramborg, P.); Differences between safe and unsafe pedestrian crossings in Switzerland (Scaramuzza, G.).
