Abstract

These welcoming remarks express the hope for a productive and enjoyable conference, comment on the importance of the conference topic to elected officials, agencies, and the general public, and discuss how King County, Washington, is encouraging greater utilization of high-occupancy commute modes. This conference was conducted by the Transportation Research Board, National Research Council, Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle and Washington State Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration and the Urban Mass Transportation Administration.
