Abstract

Intelligent transportation systems can be characterized as complex hardware/software systems. Transportation agencies face the significant challenge of managing change and growth in these systems in the face of rapidly changing technology. Configuration management is a change control tool originating in the field of software engineering that has the potential to provide significant benefit to transportation agencies. This paper presents the results of a U.S. national focus group of transportation professionals from the private and public sectors conducted to identify opportunities, risks, and challenges inherent in the application of configuration management in intelligent transportation systems.
