Abstract
On the basis of research it is ascertained to what extent traffic conflict analysis can be applied as a method for traffic safety research. There is no substantial relation between conflicts and accidents. It is suggested to apply traffic encounters instead of traffic volumes to measure the exposure and to use the results of conflicts in combination with other data, such as those derived from observations of the behaviour of road-users.
