Abstract

Incorporation of environmental factors and their consideration in transportation systems planning has become increasingly important in order to avoid conflicts and problems in future project development. Methods for incorporating environmental factors in thoroughfare planning studies in north carolina are described and the most recentstaff guidelines for incorporating these factors in studies are presented. Also discussed are the documentation of environmental inventories, the use of environmental data in development of the transportation plan, and the importance of system level environmental studiesin right-of-way protection.
