Abstract

After giving a definition of research, the need for, the different attitudes toward and the goals of research are discussed. Then the development, selection and control, optimum size, location of responsibility, coordination, advisory groups, and the balance between in-house and contract research are discussed. Finally the relationship between research and development, the initiation and evaluation, financing, accounting and cost control systems, the communication between research findings, selection of research staff, and the planning of career progression are discussed.
