Abstract

Risk-taking behaviour by drivers is put within the context of a general model of utility maximisation by speed choice. It is concluded that exact risk homeostasis will be displayed only under certain conditions. Under quite general conditions behaviour approaching homeostasis will occur, that is, the safety effects expected from engineering measures will be discounted to a considerable degree by shifts in behaviour.
