Abstract

A better understanding of route choice and the factors that influence the path chosen could significantly improve the opportunities to make the network performance better. The links between network performance, demand and supply variations, and the resultant traveller behaviour are poorly understood. Travellers with different behaviours may respond differently to network uncertainty caused by demand and supply variations. In this paper, the authors examine the effect of considering risk taking behaviour in route choice model and its impact on the estimation of travel time reliability of a road network subject to demand and supply variations. Numerical experiments are also conducted to investigate how the different route choice models affect network performance.
