Abstract

A newly designed full-depth precast concrete overhang system is presentedin this paper. Full-depth precast concrete panels are used in the overhang span, eliminating the need for building and attaching formwork to the fascia girder. At the interior spans typical half-depth stay-in-place panelsare used to reduce the uncertainty of using a completely new bridge deck system. The construction process of the full-depth system is outlined for successful implementation in new bridge deck construction. Key aspects of the design are highlighted with strengths and weaknesses of the present design addressed. Design recommendations are provided based on practical experience from constructing and analyzing the full-depth precast overhang system. Although the system has recently been put into use in the state of Texas, it is expected that proposed design recommendations would improve the performance and further reduce construction time, and therefore costs, at the precast yard and on-site for workers.
