Abstract

The traffic condition in Tokyo is characterised by huge traffic demands or inefficient vehicle usage. To solve this problem, Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has applied a centerline shifting system on several main streets whose directional traffic demands changed in some time periods. In this paper, the following topics are presented: (1) System structure of centerline shifting; (2) Operating concept; centerline shifting and changeable lane direction; and (3) Examples and effects on Eitai and Mitaka Dori Avenue.
