Abstract

IT intersection project targets the realization of "man-friendly, safe and comfortable road traffic system" by introducing the means for solving various road traffic issues into the intersections, and by constructing a network that interconnects the intelligent intersections. A model demonstration facility for IT intersections network-"Optical Communications-Based Intersection Support System" was successfully operated in this year in Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. This report describes the concept, outline and usefulness of the IT-based intelligent intersection support network. An IT intersection is defined as an intelligent intersection that incorporates the up-to-date information technology. Various equipment (sensors, traffic signal controllers, information supplying equipment, etc.) provided on an intersection are configured into a network, in conjunction with the intelligent traffic control system (ITCS) to build an IT intersection, which is coordinated with various systems in UTMS (Universal Traffic Management Systems) to offer comfortable mobility. The IT intersections make it possible to protect vulnerable group (aged people, handicapped people, etc.), and to prevent traffic accidents, and to alleviate traffic jams and traffic pollution, and to support traffic law enforcement and disaster relief and emergency services.
