Abstract
The planning, construction, and use of bikeways is discussed with particular reference to the George Washington Memorial Parkway Pathway near Washington, D.C. Trails are advocated under two conditions only, either as the only alternative for safe bicycling in an area parallel to a major highway or connecting two or more major points, or to provide a unique recreational facility-access to or through a recreation area not presently accessible by bike.
