Abstract

The ICARE Project permitted from 1995 up to 1997 the development and promotion of a contactless tool for ticketing in 4 very contrasting cities (Konstanz, Lisbon, Venice, Paris). This system is now under intensive testing (more than 15 million transactions and around 50,000 bearers). Other cities have joined the pioneer group. The follow up of ICARE, called CALYPSO, aims to extend concretely those transport applications to many services needed by the inhabitants of our cities (identification, payments in general i.e. electronic purse, information, call for assistance). In fact it will be a double integration: one at a regional level by integrating those services in 4 given zones and a second one at the European level by allowing the promotion of common tools to do so. CALYPSO will also utilize its results during 4 important events occurring in those cities in 1998 and 2000: Football World Cup, in Paris, 1998; Exhibition on the sea, in Lisbon, 1998; Jubileo, in Italy, 2000; and Garden show, in Konstanz, 2000.
