Abstract

Container shipment is probably the biggest development in the field of logistics during the 20th century and containerization has become the predominant means of sea transport. The growth in container trade has forced theterminal operators to develop and invest in automation technology to be able cope with the increased container volumes. The automation concept of the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg has been further refined and is being implemented in the ongoing expansion of the Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) from 2.6 million TEU to 5.2 million TEU capacity. Tobe able to control all of the terminal logistics processes at CTB, a new terminal operating software, Terminalstar, is being implemented. The comprehensive IT system is designed to control and to optimize resource utilizations and therefore the overall terminal productivity.
