Today there is no quantitative valuation of encroachment on the environment. There are several methods which try to make a monetary valuation of encroachment on the environment. Some methods depend on revealed preferences and others on stated preferences. The aim of this literature survey is to describe these methods and their problems, and to summarize studies of the methods themselves as well as studies of the methods of encroachment on the environment caused by traffic and roads. The literature has been found by looking in databases, reading references and also by following suggestions from several colleagues. All methods have both advantages and disadvantages. With this literature survey, the conclusion reached is that before any of these methods can be used there is a need for studying and developing the various methods. Another result of the literature survey is that the conclusion is made that Binary Choice is a promising method, which could perhaps be developed and used for evaluating encroachment on the environment.
