Abstract

Research and development of next-generation traffic management system UTMS 21 is proceeding in line with ITS developed by the Japanese police and Japanese ITS architecture. This work is being conducted with the aim of further developing and expanding UTMS 21, whose key infrastructure is two-way communication based on an infrared beacon method, in an effort to bring about a safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly traffic society. UTMS 21 currently comprises eight subsystems. An introduction to Pedestrian Information and Communication Systems (PICS), fast emergency preemption systems (FAST), and Intelligent Integrated ITV (industrial television) Systems (IIIS) is provided.
