Abstract

Environmental risks and expectations in the roading industry have increased significantly in New Zealand recently. In the last five years the number of offences incurred under the Resource Management Act by both clients and contractors in the roading industry have escalated considerably. To ensure compliance and meet environmental demands, Fulton Hogan has implemented a number of voluntary environmental initiatives throughout its contracting business. These initiatives are integrated into all parts of the business by all staff and by three dedicated and specialist environmental professionals. This paper highlights Fulton Hogan’s training initiatives (the ‘Keep it Clean’ environmental education programme), environmental management systems (including ISO14001), and a research and development programme which has a strong environmental flavour.
