Past research studies have shown that drivers over 65 years of age tend to be involved in more severe crashes compared to middle-aged drivers, relative to their population and miles driven. This analysis uses a statistical modeling technique to identify factors contributing to injury severity in aged drivers. Two separate models were developed for rural and urban locations, which incorporated several potential explanatory variables. Results showed that speed, gender, presence of passengers, road type and street-lighting conditions affected injury severity of older drivers on both rural and urban roads. Possible countermeasures for reducing injury severity are discussed. (Author/publisher)
