Abstract

The contemporary transport and traffic situation not only in big but also in middle-size towns requires ever more urgently the introduction of suitable and effective measures. The steadily increasing traffic trend is obvious from the development of town traffic and from the perspectives resulting from traffic studies and from master plans. The coordination of traffic light control belongs among those measures which should be prepared and realized as quickly as possible. The problems of traffic light control of crossings are rather vast and cover a number of professions. This contribution deals with a narrowly limited field of traffic light control; it deals exclusively with the preconditions for its application in our middle-size to big Czechoslovak towns except the capital Prague. It offers some suggestions for the proceedings of solution, some criteria for realization and evaluation. It cannot evidently cover all the problems. However it chooses those sections which should be the point of issue for the design, realization and consequent appreciation of the traffic control systems in our situation.
