Contribution of Volkswagen to fuel efficient and clean motor vehicles.

Abstract

Volkswagen is a leading developer of technology to limit air pollution from cars. One of its most popular products is the TDI engine, using direct injection with turbocharging, which can comply with emission limits together with minimum fuel consumption. To attain these objectives fuel quality must also be improved, and the fuel's sulphur content must be almost zero. Better exhaust emission treatment, including pre-combustion and post-combustion exhaust gas treatments, is being combined with sophisticated light-weight construction. Volkswagen is also looking for alternative fuels, which avoid components with high ozone-forming potential; it has been investigating mixtures using methanol and mixtures using ethanol. A special range of Volkswagen cars has been developed for Mexico, where it is especially important to introduce stricter limits for air pollution and other forms of environmental contamination. A table details for these models the fuel consumption, and the levels of emission of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. The performance of the Volkswagen Jetta 1,8 1 multi-fuel-concept 1993 is also tabulated.
