This paper reviews the nature of pollutants emitted by petrol and diesel engine vehicles, their origin and the manner in which they are influenced by engine operating conditions engine design features and fuel composition. It briefly discusses the patterns of existing and proposed legislation for the control of pollutants in the UK. and elsewhere.
