Abstract

Reviews papers by H.L. Ross, H.L. Votey, and L. Phillips et al on the deterrence of alcohol-impaired driving. The effects of legal, technical, psychological, moral, and cultural influences are discussed. Specific areas considered include "fear" vs "moral" components of law, the effects of institutional controls and informal controls such as peer pressure and role models, risk perception, and attitudes toward crime. A comparison of Norway, Sweden, and the US shows that Scandinavian drivers are subjected to greater range and intensity of control influences than are American drivers. It is recommended that a causal analysis of simple deterrence be supplemented by a contextual analysis of general ./.F3
