Abstract

The laying of rolled asphalt wearing courses during cold weather increases the risk of poor compaction and loss of chippings. This report gives information on average hourly air temperatures during the colder months for a range of locations throughout great britain. In addition, the cooling effect of wind and, to a lesser extent, air temperature on a rolled-asphalt wearing course has been calculated to determine the time available between laying and rolling in winter conditions.
