In Noosa Council, Queensland strategic transport planning is directed toward pursuing behavioural change and investing in facilities and programs to increase use of sustainable transport modes. In this context a transport plan has been developed for the hinterland town of Cooroy, a community located approximately 20km inland from Noosa, with the key challenge to achieve sustainable transport in rural town with low population densities. The aim of the study was to improve the connectivity and accessibility of the town and improve the safety, amenity, identity and appeal of the Noosa hinterland's principle business centre for pedestrians, cyclists, community transport, horse riding and vehicular networks. The project involved significant community involvement in the issues, option development and analysis. This paper therefore examines the challenges faced in this project as well as the sustainable solutions developed. The paper will also address how the study embraced Noosa Shire Council's road diet strategy, which looks at reclaiming existing vehicle space to give back to other transport modes.
