Abstract

The development and installation of an intelligent transport system (ITS) in District Six of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in Miami, USA is described. Implementation of the Sunguide project along the I-95 corridor was identified as top priority in the plan for full ITS deployment. The components of the system include a fibre optic trunk, CCTV cameras, dynamic message signs, an interim control centre, field communications hubs, detector stations, inductive loops, video image detectors, and a control centre. The applications software and the executive subsystem are described. The benefits of the systems management approach to project deployment include the ability to accommodate budget changes, the ability to adjust to technology and marketplace changes, and testing support for complex contractor-supplied black boxes.
